Hailed by the Guinness World Guide of Records as the largest competition of its sort, the Jazz Fest (June 29 via July 9, 2006) starts cooking at 8 p.m. on June 28 at Salle Wilfred Pelletier, Place des Arts, with nothing lower than a pre-pageant birthday concert carried out by the King himself. Yes, the King, as in BB, the octogenarian who simply launched his thirty sixth album for this auspicious event, including duets with Eric Clapton and Elton John.
In between there were excellent performances from Charles Haid, Michael Warren, Keil Martin, Dennis Franz, Joe Spano, Rene Enrique, Robert Prosky, Ken Olin, Jon Cypher, Ed Marinaro and Taurean Blaque. And who could forget Trinidad Silva as the cooly hip Jesus Martinez, head of a Latino Gang who would partially redeem himself by eventually trying to come back good.
Rob performs acoustic guitar and fronts the band as lead singer while Michael is heard all through on vibes and infrequently on percussion and piano. They usually get some nice backup from the likes of guitarist Ben Charest (greatest identified for his infectious movie rating for Les Triplettes de Bellville); trumpet and flugelhorn player Ivanhoe Jolicoeur; upright bassist Sage Reynolds; and violinist Josh Zubot.
